Restylane is a biodegradable cosmetic dermal filler made from hyaluronic acid. The filler is called NASHA (Non-Animal Stabilized Hyaluronic Acid). What this means, in everyday language, is that NASHA is a synthesized form of hyaluronic acid that is completely compatible with the human form of hyaluronic acid – they can be interchanged. The NASHA in Restylane is derived from non-animal proteins relieving any worry the patient may have concerning possible animal-based disease transmission, and potential allergic reactions to the product.
The main function of Restylane treatment is to reduce and correct wrinkles and fine lines on the face. Injections are administered into the dermis with a very fine, tiny needle. The patient experiences only minor discomfort, if any at all. However, in some cases patient may ask for, or the practitioner may recommend, a small topical analgesic before the injections begin.
Restylane therapy achieves its results by adding a dermal filler to the affected area. The treated area becomes smoother and younger looking as a result. In some cases, Restylane is used in conjunction with Botox ® treatments, enhancing the final outcome of youthful looking skin. However, it is recommended that Restylane not be used alongside other treatments that work on the dermal layer of skin as irritation and inflammation may occur.
As an individual ages their ability to retain water for a smooth, fresh, youthful appearance decreases. NASHA helps to hold moisture in the dermis of the skin by grabbing and holding onto water molecules in the region, just like the human version of hyaluronic acid.
Restylane was introduced by a Swedish doctor and company and was placed on the market in 1996. Since that time, people in over 70 countries have tried the procedure and to date over 3 million treatments have been performed. In the U.S., Restylane has been approved by the FDA for treatment of wrinkles and folds in the facial region since 2003, although it has been practiced in this country since its introduction in 1996.
According to clinical studies, Restylane is relatively safe with few adverse side effects. Common side effects occur bruising at the site of injection along with swelling and temporary redness, although it’s very rare that any effect last longer than a week. After treatment, practitioners recommend avoiding exercise and alcohol for at least six hours. If redness or inflammation appear following the procedure it is best to avoid any length of UV exposure from any source in addition to staying away from cold weather outdoor activities until the skin returns to normal.
The results of Restylane are usually visible instantaneously and last up to six months before additional treatment. Adding to its appeal, the quantity of injections needed to produce the same result over subsequent treatment sessions decreases over time.
Fees for treatment with Restylane vary according to location and practitioner although an average injection will run between $500 and $1000. The procedure is not covered by most medical insurance companies.
